At the end of last week, the cheese dairy on the Oltscheren Alp received a special visit. Suman Shrestha and his cousin Subarna Shrestha, who are currently visiting their relatives in Switzerland, were shown the Swiss cheese-making craft in detail on the Alp. This is of particular interest to Suman Shrestha. He runs a cheese shop in the Kathmandu Valley with cheese that is produced around 300 kilometers further east in Ilam. Demand for cheese has increased significantly in recent years. On the one hand because of tourists and the Western diet – pizza is now widespread in Nepal too – and on the other hand also in local cuisine.
